
The United States domestic primary aluminium production stood at 77,000 tonnes in December 2020, up by 3,000 tonnes or 4.05 per cent from 74,000 tonnes in November, showed the recent data released by the United States Geological Survey. With this, the total aluminium production in 2020 came in at 1.01 million tonnes, 7 per cent less than a year ago but 14 per cent more than in 2018.

The average daily production in December 2020 was 2,480 tonnes, almost flat compared to the daily production of 2,450 tonnes in November and less by 16 per cent than in December 2019.
Total aluminium recovered from scrap in December 2020 was 249,000 tonnes, 6 per cent less month-on-month and 8 per cent on the year. Of this, 131,000 tonnes of aluminium was recovered from new scrap, while 117,000 tonnes from old scrap.
Total aluminium recovered from scrap in the entire year of 2020 was 3.19 million tonnes, 8 per cent less than in 2019 and 14 per cent less than in 2018. Secondary production from new scrap in 2020 was 1.72 million tonnes and from old scrap was 1.46 million tonnes.
In December 2020, the average US spot market price of primary aluminium ingot was $1.06 per pound, 5 per cent more than in November 2020 and 12 per cent more than in December 2019. The average cash price of primary aluminium ingot on LME in December 2020 was $0.915 per pound, 4 per cent more than in November 2020 and 14 per cent more than in December 2019.
In the entire 2020, the average US spot market price of primary aluminium ingot came in at $0.897 per pound, while the average cash price on LME stood at $0.772 per pound.
Inventories of primary aluminium in LME-approved warehouses, including off-warrant inventories, in the United States decreased to 209,251 t at the end of December 2020 from 210,981 t at the end of November 2020. Inventories of secondary aluminium (North American Secondary Aluminium Alloy Contract) in LME-approved warehouses, including off-warrant inventories, in the United States also stood lower at 25,403 tonne at the end of December from 27,742 tonnes at the end of November.
