US-based Crystal Finishing Systems expanding

Citing a growth in business, the head of central Wisconsin aluminum extruder and fabricator Crystal Finishing Systems said Wednesday the company is expanding its operations, with plans to install up to five presses and other equipment at a newly acquired manufacturing plant.

"We're going to install additional presses, a large vertical paint line and a large anodized line," Mark Matthiae, president of privately owned Crystal Finishing Systems of Schofield, Wisconsin, said in an interview.

His company has purchased a shuttered, 677,000-square-foot facility in Mosinee, about 10 miles from Schofield, and intends to have the initial press and paint line up and running in the first quarter of 2014. It will be a 3,500-ton press "that can run up to a 12-inch billet," he said.

Eventually, Crystal could install five presses at the Mosinee location over the next two or three years, in the process increasing the company's total workforce from the current 500 people to about 800.

Matthiae said the expansion is needed to accommodate his company's growth. "Our business has doubled in the last three years," he said.

"Some of the new work is coming in already," he added. "We're going to hit the ground running. We know which customers are going to feed the system."

Matthiae attributed the growth to the company's diverse market mix. Crystal serves a variety of markets, including truck-trailer, residential window and doors, architectural, industrial, medical and automotive.

"We're a one-stop shop," he said. "We do assembly, we do contract manufacturing, and all the coatings from liquid to powder."

Crystal was founded by Matthiae and two other people in 1993. Since then, it has mushroomed into a roughly 800,000-square-foot facility in Schofield.

Although the company's operations are located in Wisconsin, Matthiae said Crystal "services the entire country. We're trucking out to California, Texas, Tennessee and the East Coast," among other domestic destinations.
