Uncertainty dogs Anrak's captive jetty plan

With the Centre's keenness to consider establishing a major port in Nakkapalli mandal in the district, Anrak Aluminium Ltd (AAL) floated by Ras al-Khaimah Investment Authority--Penna Group's plans to have a captive jetty at Rajaiahpeta in the same locality may not materialise.
AAL, which is setting up an alumina refinery, smelter, and captive power plant at a cost of Rs.14,000 crore, was sanctioned a captive jetty at Rajaiahpeta in October 2010. A G.O. was issued allowing it to develop two berths in the first phase with an investment of Rs.479 crore to handle four million tonnes per annum.
The government faced problem in land acquisition for the jetty because of which the project remained a non-starter. However, sources said, some officials deputed by Anrak visited Dondavaka in Pedateenarla panchayat a few months ago to conduct hydrographical and geological tests.
With the major port proposal under consideration, the Rajaihpeta jetty plan is likely to be put under abeyance. At the time of de-notifying minor port at Mutyalammapalem in October 2008, the government cited the reason that location of two ports within a radius of 30 km will lead to overlapping of port limits.
Minor port at Mutyalammapalem was mooted in 1995 and the location proposed for the project has more draft than the place where Gangavaram Port is located. In the G.O., it was stated a minor port at Mutyalammapalem would cause hindrance in the extending of port limits by Gangavaram.
The G.O. Ms. No. 34 had also stated that the de-notification would ensure utmost safety and occupational efficiency for Gangavaram Port.
Anrak has already acquired 1925 acres from the AP Industrial Infrastructure Corporation for setting up the 1.5 million tonne per annum alumina refinery at Rachapalli in Makavarapalem mandal, about 120 km from here.
The project is in advance stage of completion even as uncertainty continues in APMDC plan to extract bauxite mineral from the agency area following orders from the Ministry of Mines.
The Ministry kept all clearances on bauxite mining under suspension in August-2010 pending fresh evaluation by expert committee on concerns expressed over environment and threat to livelihood of the tribals.
