Trump may implement new legislations on steel and aluminium import ‘very soon’

On Monday June 12, President Donald Trump announced at a Cabinet meeting that the United States will soon implement new legislation to control the dumping of foreign steel and aluminium in the country.

"We'll be having some major legislation very soon on the dumping of steel in our country, which is absolutely killing our workers," Trump said and he made a similar comment on aluminium import too.

Though the restrictive measures on imports were mainly targeted at subsidized Chinese import, it could also affect other countries like Japan and South Korea that export such products to the U.S. market.

Any countermeasures will be subjected to the findings of the administration's investigations under Section 232 of the Trade Expansion Act, which will look into the national security implications of steel and aluminium imports.

White House press secretary Sean Spicer said that Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross "should have a further update on the review...later this week..."

Spicer also briefed the media that they will make recommendations to Congress to address antidumping provisions, once the results are out. According to statistics from the Commerce Department, U.S. aluminium imports jumped 18% year over year in 2016.
