In partnership with Trivium Packaging, California Olive Ranch has launched the latest packaging construct, a 335 ml 100% recyclable aluminium bottle, to approach its sustainability goals, supplying an eco-friendly solution for its flagship olive oils.

California Olive Ranch believes in providing the highest standard of consumer packaging, which elevates the brand’s sustainability quotient alongside keeping the California Olive Ranch olive and avocado oils safe from foreign objects or high temperatures. The brand also flaunts a line of sprays, olive oil-based dressings, marinades, and sauces. Olive Ranch is looking forward to circulating its Lucini brand of oils and sauces in sustainable packaging options.
The company stated: “In partnership with more than 50 family farmers throughout the state of California and countless others across the globe, the company is committed to transparency and sustainable practices in both growing and packaging.”
Till now, the company had been packing its range of edible oils in either a bag-in-box module or in glass jars and bottles. With the advent of worldwide ESG protocols, Olive Ranch also wishes to upgrade its portfolio with aluminium, one of the most sustainable elements found on the earth’s surface. Since non-ferrous metal can be infinitely recycled, aluminium bottles are by far the safest option for the food packaging industry. Also, they can be infinitely recycled, creating a closed material loop and decreasing carbon emissions by a hefty percentage.
California Olive Ranch vice president of Quality and R&D, Mary Mori, commented: “At California Olive Ranch, we are dedicated to delivering a versatile product line of high-quality cooking staples that meet the needs of every consumer, and that is exemplified by the launch of our aluminium-bottled oils,”
“By creating our smallest, most lightweight bottle yet, we are able to not only continue building upon our sustainable packaging efforts, but we’re also offering consumers a more accessible price point to our bestselling line of olive and avocado oils. Additionally, the size of the bottle allows for ease-of-use for packing while travelling, which is highly appealing to our consumer base,” Mori asserted.
Trivium Packaging has taken up the responsibility of supplying these 335 ml aluminium bottles for Olive Ranch, which follow all the associated standards of an edible products packaging format: “Olive oil, coconut oil, vegetable, and cooking oils—all unsung necessities of our daily routines—all often come in plastic bottles. In fact, in the North American market, nearly 80% of edible oil brands in packaging under 750 mL—and the majority of larger containers as well—use plastic.”
As Trivium proudly puts it, California Olive Ranch is the very first brand to use aluminium bottles for liquid oil packaging purposes. The aluminium container is bespoke with a smaller structure and an easy-to-use cap that helps in a smooth flow and omits spillage. The cap has been forged out of high-density and low-density polyethene.
Mori added: “We considered an aluminium cap to accompany the bottle, but we wanted to provide the pour-spout ability, which was not possible with the aluminium cap. The consumer’s convenience in use is one of our top priorities that we did not want to lose on this packaging.”
Though, at present, the aluminium bottle has been tagged with a brand label for decoration, Mori assures the company is in talks to integrate the labelling in such a way that recycling facilities might not report any difficulties in pushing the bottles through recycling zones.
“Additionally, as we are continuously improving our products, we hope to switch to a more sustainable labelling method that would allow for even better universal recyclability,” Mori said confidently.
