The global aluminium industry remained enterprising in July 2021. The June quarter financial results revealed that most of the companies in the sector recorded revenue growth due to the global rise in aluminium prices. The positive trend of the market has delivered the industry some extra strength to regain its power following the multi-wave stress of Covid-19. Emirates Global Aluminium (EGA) earmarked the century shipload of bauxite export from the world’s second-largest producing nation, Guinea, since the company’s initiation in August 2019 from its wholly-owned bauxite-mining subsidiary Guinea Alumina Corporation. July 2021 also witnessed Anil Agarwal led Vedanta’s announcement towards the expansion of BALCO aluminium smelter production capacity by 414 kilo-tonnes per annum (KTPA), while development involves an investment of INR 6,611 crore over the next two years.
On 11th July 2021, Emirates Global Aluminium earmarked the 100th shipload of bauxite exported from Guinea, since the company’s initiation in August 2019 from its wholly-owned bauxite-mining subsidiary Guinea Alumina Corporation.

Gangavaram Port in Visakhapatnam, India, the deepest and the most modern port in India, has reportedly discharged 125,380 tonnes of bauxite within 24 hours using the Mechanical Unloading System, the fastest bauxite discharge rate in the history of any port in India and possibly in the world. The vessel M V. Berge Apo, carrying 165,598 tonnes of bauxite, was berthed at the port on account of M/S Vedanta Limited. So, the latter has expressed gratitude and appreciated the port management and staff who helped achieve the milestone.
The global resources company founded by a group of experienced and largely American natural resources investors, Concord Resources Holdings Limited has acquired the majority ownership in New Day’s principal holdings, which include its Noranda Alumina refinery and NICHE Chemical non-metallurgical alumina business in Gramercy, Louisiana, as well as its Noranda Bauxite mine operations in St. Ann, Jamaica owned in partnership with the Government of Jamaica.

Vedanta has planned to expand Bharat Aluminium Company’s smelter capacity by 414 kilo-tonnes per annum (KTPA). The expansion involves an investment of INR 6,611 crore over the next two years. Bharat Aluminium Company (Balco) is a part of Vedanta Group Company. Balco will now have a total capacity to close to one million tonnes. With this investment, the company’s value-added product portfolio will increase to 92 per cent.

A source reports that Sanjeev Gupta is making great efforts to lay hold of its Belgian aluminium rolling mill after a US private equity firm AIP took legal action in the UK to seize control. In an attempt to do so, Gupta’s metals group GFG Alliance, which is the subject of an investigation by the UK’s Serious Fraud Office, is fighting to refinance more than $5 billion of debt since the collapse of Greensill Capital, its main lender.

Dengfeng Power Group Co Ltd’s aluminium alloy unit stopped production as flooding water entered the plant, according to a Reuters report. The incident occurred after water spread into a high-temperature solution in the alloy tank and caused a blast. The Dengfeng government said in a statement that no casualties were reported. The government also started safety inspections.

On Wednesday, July 7, Rusal, the metals segment of En+ Group, the world’s largest producer of low carbon aluminium and independent hydropower, has announced that it has entered into a partnership agreement with Ball Corporation to produce aerosols and other containers, using ground-breaking inert anode technology. The ultra-low inert anode carbon aluminium is one of the several levers that Ball uses to reduce the carbon footprint of its aluminium slugs, cans, and bottles.

On 22nd July 2021, India’s projected aluminium hub, Odisha’s Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik inaugurated India’s first zero-discharge aluminium dross processing unit in Jharsuguda. The facility has been developed up by Runaya Refining LLP. In 2019, Mr Naveen Patnaik laid the founding stone of the Refining project, however, it is a spearheading facility for the treatment and processing of aluminium dross. Runaya secured the license for the unique development of processing technology from TAHA International, a multidiscipline solutions provider offering innovative, environmentally friendly and cost-effective services, equipment and products to the aluminium and steel industries worldwide.
The Norwegian aluminium company, Hydro’s Aluminium Metal unit has inked a letter of intent (LOI) to acquire land to develop a “state-of-the-art aluminium recycling plant” in Cassopolis, Michigan, that will produce aluminium extrusion ingot.
