TMS and ASM International launch a new journal on Energy Materials
The journal will publish peer-reviewed, original research and review articles focused on the science of materials applied to or being investigated to address unique aspects of current and emerging energy technologies. The journal, which joins the established Metallurgical and Materials Transactions A: Physical Metallurgy and Materials Science and Metallurgical and Materials Transactions B: Process Metallurgy and Materials Processing Science publications, will begin publishing in March 2014.
“Advancing materials solutions for energy and environmental challenges is a topic of great importance to TMS, and Metallurgical and Materials Transactions is certainly one of our most influential means of engaging the global materials community,” said James J. Robinson, TMS Executive Director. “I very much look forward to seeing how these two activities produce new synergies via an evolutionary “E” volume of the journal.”
Thomas S. Passek, ASM Managing Director, said, “Advances in materials technology are the foundation for technologies that will lead to the development of innovative energy systems and improve energy efficiency of industrial processes. I remember when this concept was first shared with our TMS Partners years ago and it is nice to see it come to fruition. We are pleased to expand the Metallurgical and Materials Transactions brand to provide a forum for capturing research and implementation results to support current and future materials developments for energy system application.”
The new journal will cover a broad range of energy technologies and focus on why the technology matters for a particular energy application. These technologies include battery, biomass, fuel cell, geothermal, hydrocarbons, hydrogen storage, nuclear, solar cell, super capacitor, thermal conversion, thermochemistry, thermoelectricity, wind, and other energy technologies as they emerge. Various areas of materials research, including larger materials issues with applications to energy, will be included.
David Laughlin, principal editor of Metallurgical and Materials Transactions A and B, will serve in the same capacity for the new journal. He is an ALCOA professor of Physical Metallurgy in the Department of Materials Science & Engineering at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. A TMS Fellow Award recipient in 2008, Professor Laughlin also received the TMS Distinguished Scientist/Engineer Award in 2009 for research excellence in one or more areas related to electronic, magnetic, and photonic materials science. He became a Fellow of ASM International in 1989. Laughlin also has authored more than 400 technical publications in the areas of phase transformations, physical metallurgy, and magnetic materials.
