Tiwai smelter cuts back on electricity

The smelter is reducing its electricity load from 572MW to 540MW because of extremely low hydro lake levels.
New Zealand Aluminium Smelter general manager Ryan Cavanagh said it was working closely with Meridian Energy to help conserve storage in the South Island hydro lakes.
"We are working with customers and suppliers to minimise any adverse impact to production schedules," he said.
