Tiwai Point aluminium smelter appoints Chris Blenkiron as new CEO, nearly three years ahead due for shut down

Rio Tinto’s Tiwai Point aluminium smelter in New Zealand has appointed Chris Blenkiron, as the new chief executive officer and general manager nearly three years before the smelter is due for shut down.

On 21st September 2021, the company announced that the newly appointed CEO will begin his role in early 2022.

The former CEO Stew Hamilton declared his resignation in May 2021 and left the organisation in July to grab a new opportunity at electricity company Mercury.

Dan van der Westhuizen, Acting Managing Director, Rio Tinto Pacific Operations said: “Chris has demonstrated a strong people-focused approach to delivering business outcomes and I believe he is the right fit to lead the excellent team at Tiwai.”

Presently, Chris working as the President of the prefabricated steel shed company NS BlueScope in Indonesia and previously he has working experience in the New Zealand Steel market as general manager of sales and business development.

Chris Blenkiron carries a successful track record of 15 years plus leadership roles in manufacturing and building products businesses across New Zealand, Australia and Asia.

“His depth of experience in forming lasting partnerships with key stakeholders will be important for NZAS, as we work with our community on the future of the Southland region,” van der Westhuizen added.

Outlook for the Indian Aluminium Industry

“Chris will play a vital role in managing important relationships and overseeing the company’s obligations and wider role in New Zealand.”

Rio Tinto announced in July 2020 that the smelter will be permanently close down in August 2021. However, in January a new power deal with Meridian Energy drove Rio Tinto to change its decision and announced it would continue operations until the end of 2024.
