The world’s first POAL recycling plant for producing Ecoallene will start in Italy in September 2018. POAL is a polyethylene + aluminium polycomposite recovered from food packaging.

The plant will recover POAL and then turn it into a new recyclable material suitable for use in automotive, construction, giftware and other markets.
Ecoallene is a new green material that is easy to recycle. It is also easy to colour, as well, and has a slight glittery look because of containing aluminium particles.
This pioneering project, developed by an engineering company AMUT together with the Italian start-up Ecoplasteam, will be having an initial capacity of recycling 7000 tonnes of recovered POAL every year. Ecoplasteme carries out both technology for POAL treatment and washing the extrusion line to turn the final materials into pellets.
Until now only the cellulose fraction has been reliably recovered, but now with this brand new project, the main focus will be on the recovery of polycomposite part of the packaging.
After recovering the cellulose, the remaining part is usually baled and sent to the Ecoplasteam facility. It is then washed to reduce the presence of any remaining paper fibres, and then mixed, filtered, and granulated before being turned into Ecoallene pellets for use as a raw material.
Amut says the final Ecoallene pellet can be extruded or injection moulded like a standard polymer.
