Aluminium beverage cans are one of the most widely recycled beverage packagings globally. The main reasons that have contributed to the popularity are its easy recyclability over an unlimited number of times and the maximum amount of recycled content.
{alcircleadd}Vancouver-based beverage company, Teaspoons & Co. has decided to shift towards a sustainable way by using aluminium cans for all of their drinks, except for slushes and hot beverage offerings. Throughout their lifespans, aluminium cans can be recycled indefinitely. A bamboo fibre straw that fits through the hole in the beverage cans is sturdy and big enough to slurp up both the toppings and the tea.
The recycling rate of Used Beverage Cans (UBC) is over double the rate of that of any other beverage container. It's interesting to note that it only takes 60 days for an aluminium can to go from the recycling bin to the grocery aisle as a brand-new can.
Before venturing into aluminium cans, the Vancouver-based bubble tea shop was the first in Canada to employ the "Butterfly Cup," an alternative to aluminium cans that uses a special butterfly-fold design to do without lids.
“We have made a commitment to be as proactive as we can when it comes to the environment. Unfortunately, we are part of an industry that’s notorious for its use of disposable plastic waste,” said Joyce Yim, founder of Teaspoons & Co.
Teaspoons & Co. is working nonstop to eliminate plastics. They sell DIY bubble tea kits and reusable tea cups online in addition to serving bubble tea at the store. Metal straws are included in each kit, enabling bubble tea drinkers to produce less trash at home.
