Sustainability weekly recap: Novelis collaborates with Southern Company to decarbonise North America’s aluminium production

Sustainable drives are gaining immense popularity in the aluminium sector every passing day. Alro Group, a Romanian aluminium producer, has planned to invest 15 million euros in 3 projects to reduce its ecological impact and increase competitiveness, including installing a 1,500 KW photovoltaic power station in Alro's parking areas. Novelis Inc. partnered with Southern Company to achieve decarbonisation of aluminium production across North America, starting with Novelis' new Bay Minette plant. Novelis will support Alabama Power in developing two new 80 MW solar power plants, providing renewable energy to Novelis' new Bay Minette plant. The Montreal Canadiens' home arena, The Bell Centre, has formed a five-year partnership with Rio Tinto. The new collaboration aims to introduce infinitely recyclable cups made of aluminium to sports and entertainment events.

A £150,000 loan from the Development Bank of Wales' Green Business Loan Scheme assists Frog Bikes in preparing to create frames and forks that will lower carbon emissions by 5.8 per cent per bike. Investing in 25 per cent post-consumer recycled aluminium will save around 16kg of CO2 per 1kg of aluminium used, which equates to 28.8kg of CO2 per bike. It is stronger than fresh new aluminium, according to testing.
