Sasol alumina plant

Sasol, a major chemicals company, is investing EUR 60 million (USD 69.7 million) to expand advanced materials and specialty chemicals production capacity of its Brunsbüttel, Germany, plant. This makes their alumina production even stronger.

They'll use this cash to raise capacity at their current alumina sites. The plan centres on spherical alumina supports for advanced catalyst systems and similar stuff. So, Sasol is ramping up its game in some key areas of the industry. The expansion comes as demand rises for high-purity materials required in next-generation processing technologies.

Sasol confirmed that all construction approvals for the project have already been secured and procurement activities are underway. The company expects to appoint a general contractor later this month, while operations at the expanded facility are scheduled to begin around 2029.

"This investment is about scaling and sharpening the capabilities that differentiate Sasol in advanced materials and specialty chemicals," said Stefan Maedje, head of Advanced Materials for Sasol’s International Chemicals business. "By expanding our advanced alumina production and enhancing process performance, we are reinforcing our role as a reliable, technology-driven partner for customers in critical applications where performance and continuity of supply are non-negotiable."

The project will also introduce energy-optimisation measures and upgraded manufacturing processes to improve sustainability. According to Sasol, the expansion could reduce the product carbon footprint by up to 15 per cent per tonne compared with current production levels.

Once operational, the upgraded site will manufacture high-purity and ultra-high-purity aluminas tailored for catalyst and process technologies across specialised industrial sectors.

Maedje said that the investment represented a targeted and disciplined growth move in an established advanced materials platform, adding that it would strengthen the company’s ability to support customers requiring high-purity and ultra-high-purity aluminas, as well as speciality materials for the next generation of catalysts and process technologies.
