Rusal’s primary aluminium and alloys sales in 2020 ended on December 31 stood at 3.926 million tonnes, reflecting a downfall of 5.99 per cent from 4.176 million tonnes a year ago. In the first half of the year ended on June 30, the sales hovered around 1.890 million tonnes, which improved by 7.7 per cent in the second half of 2020 to 2.036 million tonnes. However, on a year-on-year calculation, the sales in H2 registered a decline of 7.4 per cent from 2.198 million tonnes.

This led to the downfall in company’s revenue for the full-year from US$ 9,711 million in 2019 to US$ 8,566 million. This was also due to a 5 per cent decrease in the average LME aluminium price from US$ 1,792 per tonne in 2019 to US$ 1,702 per tonne in 2020.
Rusal’s profit for 2020 also decreased by 20.9 per cent year-on-year from US$ 960 million to US$ 759 million, primarily attributed to the severely low profit of US$ 124 million in the first half of the year. It rebounded in the second half to US$ 883 million, up by 163.6 per cent from US$ 335 million in H2 2019, but could not lead to the hike for the full-year compared to the profit in 2019.
Revenue from the sales of primary aluminium and alloys in 2020 stood at US$ 7,088 million compared to US$ 8,019 million in 2019, while revenue from the sales of foil and other aluminium products pegged at US$ 381 million in comparison with US$ 410 million.
At the same time, on the back of diversified client base and efficient managerial actions, sales of VAP increased by 11.3 per cent to 1.722 million tonnes, contributing to 44 per cent of total sales versus 37 per cent in 2019. This improvement of VAP sales during 2020 was achieved amid market volatility and a decline in global demand for aluminium caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.
According to Rusal’s report, global aluminium demand was down by 1.7 per cent year-on-year to 63.9 million tonnes, while production grew by 2.3 per cent to 65.3 million tonnes.
