The United States aluminium crude metals and alloys imports totalled 407,000 tonnes in May 2023 after escalating by 32,000 tonnes or 8.53 per cent from 375,000 tonnes in April. The import volume in the earlier month (March 2023) stood at 316,000 tonnes, meaning the US imports grew by 18.67 per cent sequentially in the subsequent month, according to the US Census Bureau.

The above data reflects a month-on-month hike in the US aluminium crude metals and alloys imports during March-May following a drop in February by 28.99 per cent from 307,000 tonnes to 238,000 tonnes. Overall, the import volume showed a growing trend year-to-date.
On a year-on-year calculation, the United States aluminium crude metals and alloys imports slightly grew by 3,000 tonnes from 404,000 tonnes, learned USGS.
From January to May 2023, the United States total aluminium crude metals and alloys imports amounted to 1.64 million tonnes, down by 2.38 per cent from 1.68 million tonnes. That mirrored a YTD downward trend in US imports despite back-to-back monthly hikes this year.
The USGS data underpins that Australia is on the way to emerge as one of the leading suppliers of aluminium crude metals and alloys to the US, exporting 59,100 tonnes in May, up by 82.97 per cent from 32,300 tonnes in the earlier month. In April, the export volume also grew significantly by 132.37 per cent from 13,900 tonnes in March. In January and February, Australia exported 7,310 and 12,100 tonnes, respectively, indicating a fair business transaction between Aussie and US since the year began.
Amid all this, Canada continued to be the biggest supplier of aluminium crude metals and alloys to the US in May 2023. In the said month, the United States imported 212,000 tonnes of metal from Canada versus 237,000 tonnes. That, unfortunately, reflected a month-on-month decline of 10.55 per cent despite the overall growth in the United States imports.
However, the decline in May took place following a rise in the previous month by 9.72 per cent from 216,000 tonnes.
On an annual basis, the US imports from Canada also recorded a fall of 16.54 per cent from 254,000 tonnes.
