Revolution buys property for aluminium plant

The company that plans to build an aluminium plant in Pineville that could employ more than 1,000 people has bought property for the project.

Revolution Aluminum Propco LLC secured the property that formerly housed Pineville's International Paper mill. The startup plans to build its own mill on the property. Several other partner companies that will support the mill's operations are also expected to locate to the complex, which has been named Innovation Park.

Together, the companies are expected to spend more than $1.5 billion and employ more than 1,000 people.

"The hard work over the last year to make this day happen will pay off in huge opportunities for all of Central Louisiana," said Pineville Mayor Clarence Fields.

"Revolution Aluminum and the other tenants of the park have the potential to be important and large-scale economic drivers for the Central Louisiana region,” said Jim Clinton, President and CEO of Central Louisiana Economic Development Authority.

Revolution Aluminum, then called American Specialty Alloys, announced in February 2015 its plans to build a production complex in Pineville to make parts for the automotive and aerospace industries, taking advantage of the transition of many vehicle manufacturers from steel to lighter aluminium. At the time, the project was estimated to cost $2.4 billion and create about 1,450 jobs.

The news was celebrated as a "game changer" for Central Louisiana. The purchase of the property — a "critical milestone," according to a company release — should ease any fears about the project moving forward.

Revolution Aluminum will occupy the largest parcel on the property, about 400 acres. Two other companies, Odor Tech and Bayou Engineering, have signed leases. About 11 companies are expected to eventually call Innovation Park home. Infrastructure improvements at the site are underway.

IP closed its Pineville mill, which employed more than 200 people, in 2009.
