According to SMM survey statistics, the operating rate of the secondary aluminium alloy industry in September was 35.0 per cent, up 3.1 percentage points M-o-M but down 6.7 percentage points Y-o-Y. Industry production continued its recovery trend, but the overall operating level remained below the same period last year. On the demand side, September marked the traditional peak consumption season, with downstream orders recovering from August. End-use demand from automobiles and other sectors improved marginally, but the peak season effect has yet to fully materialise. Taha Asia Pacific, associated with Tiwai Point aluminium smelter was closed on Tuesday, and put into liquidation. This came a day after the company's recycling contract at the Tiwai Point aluminium smelter expired, revealed industry reports. The company had a five-year contract with New Zealand Aluminium Smelters (NZAS) to take dross syphoned off from the main aluminium smelting operation. It would then re-process the dross to further extract aluminium for recycling at the main plant. The shutdown has put the jobs of twenty-two staff at stake. The ‘human-centric’ car company Volvo is striving to optimise the life-cycles of its vehicles while protecting the earth’s resources. The company is working towards boosting the amount of recycled materials (non-metallic as well as metallic parts made of steel or aluminium) in its cars and reducing the quantity of virgin materials. ‘Approximately 95 per cent of the materials in our cars can be recovered and 85 per cent can be recycled,’ said research specialist Axel Edh, of Volvo Car Group at the annual Circular Materials Conference in Gothenburg, Sweden. It has been found in the latest study by Sustainable Packaging Coalition (SPC) that 92 per cent of the U.S. population has access to various recycling programs for non-metallic packaging wastes, followed closely by the same percentage for aluminium beverage cans. For both material types this broke down to 68 per cent through curbside collection—including opt-in and subscription programs—and 24 per cent through drop-off programs. JLR is known to be mulling over an ambitious plan to start using 75 per cent recycled aluminium for making Jaguar and Land Rover vehicles from 2020 onward. Currently, less than half of aluminium volume used for making JLR vehicles comes from recycled sources. The shortfall is mainly attributed to a supply shortage. If JLR wants to increase the proportion of recycled aluminium it uses significantly it needs to find an alternative source of scrap aluminium. Canada’s Matalco Inc. has officially opened its new Lordstown, Ohio remelt and casting plant. Official inauguration ceremony was held during the month of June this year. The new secondary aluminium plant will produce aluminium billets from scrap. The full commissioning of the $100 million plant was successfully carried out during end-March and the facility has been producing aluminium billets starting April this year. The Aluminum Association’s Index of new can stock (class) scrap receipts totaled 61.3 million pounds during June 2016, an increase of 4.2 per cent over the June 2015 total of 58.8 million pounds. Compared to the previous month, class scrap receipts rose 1.5 per cent over the May 2016 total of 60.4 million pounds. Year-to-date class scrap receipts through June 2016 totalled 348.8 million pounds, up 3.4 per cent over the 2015 year-to-date total of 337.5 million pounds.
