According to SMM survey statistics, the operating rate of the secondary aluminium alloy industry in September was 35.0 per cent, up 3.1 percentage points M-o-M but down 6.7 percentage points Y-o-Y. Industry production continued its recovery trend, but the overall operating level remained below the same period last year. On the demand side, September marked the traditional peak consumption season, with downstream orders recovering from August. The Indian automobile industry stands to benefit immensely from the vehicle scrappage policy to be implemented shortly by the government, said Union Minister for Road Transport & Highways, Nitin Gadkari. He said this at the 56th ACMA annual session, held in New Delhi on August 30. The policy, which would see old cars being scrapped and scrap aluminium, steel, and copper recovered and supplied to OEM manufacturers at cheaper rates, will be implemented in a phased manner. Rolled and recycled aluminium firm Novelis Inc. announced a bond issue yesterday intended to raise up to US$1.15 billion for refinancing debt. Novelis initially intended to use the funds to repurchase US$500 million of US$1.1 billion worth of notes due next year, but subsequently amended the offering to include the entirety of the outstanding notes. The bonds, which bear an interest rate of 6.25% per annum and mature in seven years, fall under Rule 144A of the United States Securities Act, which means they will not be sold to individual domestic investors, only to qualified domestic institutions and foreign buyers.
