According to SMM survey statistics, the operating rate of the secondary aluminium alloy industry in September was 35.0 per cent, up 3.1 percentage points M-o-M but down 6.7 percentage points Y-o-Y. Industry production continued its recovery trend, but the overall operating level remained below the same period last year. On the demand side, September marked the traditional peak consumption season, with downstream orders recovering from August. End-use demand from automobiles and other sectors improved marginally, but the peak season effect has yet to fully materialise. Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) is consulting on new business packaging recycling targets for paper, wood, aluminium and steel for 2018-20. The department has published three options with each option indicating different degrees of ambition. According to option 1, no increase in targets from the current 2017 targets through to 2020. Option 2 suggests the greatest rise, considering UK’s ambition to be on track to achieve the CE package recycling targets for 2025 of 65% overall. Aluminium’s targets the maximum for the three years with 57%, 59% and 61% rise. Option 3 proposes lower target increases for all materials, apart from aluminium. According to aluminium recycling statistics published by the U.S. Geological Survey and Department of Interior, the U.S. aluminium industry purchased an estimated 782 million pounds of aluminium scrap during September 2016. This is 5.5 per cent more than the September 2015 total of 741 million. USGS estimates that the total aluminium recovered from scrap in September 2016 was 302,000 tons, down 3% from the revised amount recovered in August 2016 but 6% more than that in September 2015. According to a new report published by Allied Market Research, the global metal recycling market is estimated to be worth US$ 446,472 million, registering a compound annual growth rate of 4.5% during 2016-2022. Non-ferrous metals have by far, remained the fastest growing segment; by 2022 it is anticipated to grow at a compound annual growth rate of 4.9%. According to Aluminum Association report, U.S. received a total of 53.1 million pounds of new can stock (class) scrap receipts during October 2016, which records a drop of 8 per cent over 57.7 million pounds in October 2015. Month wise, class scrap receipts saw a drop of 5.4 per cent over a total of 56.2 million pounds in September 2016. Class scrap receipts from January to October 2016 totalled 578.2 million pounds, which recorded a slight increase over the 2015 YTD total of 574.1 million pounds. Exports including scrap which accounted for roughly 45.5% of reported aluminium exports in September totalled 580 million pounds, up 13% YOY. Exports of scrap decreased 10% YOY.
Robert McClymont, a man in Lochaber plans to start-up an aluminium recycling business amid ongoing uncertainty over the future of a local smelter. Lochaber, an area in the west of the Scottish Highlands used to be the operating location for Rio Tinto-owned Alcan aluminium smelter for 90 years. The problem emerged when the mining giant made a plan to sell it to a preferred bidder. The facility, which is the last surviving aluminium smelter in the UK, used to be one of the largest organizations in the Lochaber area, employing 150 people directly and 400 workers through the supply chains. Brazil, the Recycling Capital of the world, recycled 289,500 tonnes of aluminium beverage cans out of the 294,200 tonnes available in the market in 2014 - an all-time highest in the industry since 2001, reported the Brazilian Aluminium Association (ABAL) and the Brazilian Association of Highly Recyclable Cans Manufacturers (ABRALATAS). According to data released by the two entities, 22.9 billion of packs were recycled in 2014. The average recycling rate for aluminium closures in Europe has increased to more than 50%, according to figures released recently by the “Aluminium Closures – Turn 360°” campaign by the European Aluminium Foil Association. Provisional third quarter recycling data of the current financial year has been release this year by the National Packaging Waste Database of the Environment Agency, United Kingdom. The results showed strong performance across all materials including aluminium. Although many reprocessors and exporters are yet to report their data to the central agency, the provisional results indicate at a healthy trend of recycling the materials have logged this fiscal. All materials including plastic, paper, aluminium, glass, steel, wood, and EfW have reversed the downward trends they showed last year to reach annual recycling targets in their individual categories.
