
The U.S. aluminium industry purchased an estimated 766 million pounds of aluminium scrap during July 2016; according to aluminium recycling statistics published by the U.S. Geological Survey, Department of Interior, slightly up than the July 2015 total of 760 million.
According to a USGS estimate, U.S. recovery of aluminium and aluminium alloys totalled 649 million pounds in July which records a slight rise YOY. YTD preliminary data for aluminium recovery from January to July indicate an estimated total of 4,541 million pounds, up 3.3 per cent from the 2015 YTD total of 4,397 million. U.S. exports of scrap, not included in the government’s consumption statistics dropped 14.7 per cent to 1,676 million pounds YTD in comparison to the same period of 2015.

Aluminium imports of ingot, scrap and mill products into the U.S. and Canada increased 59.4 per cent YOY to 673 million pounds in August 2016. Aluminium exports in August (including scrap, which accounted for roughly 46.1 per cent of reported exports in August) increased 9.1 per cent to 608 million pounds YOY. Exports of scrap dropped 13.9 per cent YOY. From January to August 2016, total imports were up 24.5 per cent to 5,283 million pounds while exports were down slightly to 4,151 million pounds. This indicates the rise of cheap imports from China and Russia.
