Recycled aluminium weekly recap: Ind-Ra upgraded Runaya’s rating; Samsung electronics’ Gulf arm launched a new initiative to promote sustainability

The week has seen a few major happenings in the recycled aluminium industry. The industry has witnessed the upgradation of the company’s rating and acquisitions and announcement of sustainability report by Aludium. Let's recapitulate some of the top aluminium news from recycled aluminium sector.

Runaya announced that India Ratings and Research (Ind-Ra) upgraded the company’s long-term issuer rating to ‘IND BBB’ from ‘IND BBB-’. The upgradation is due to substantial improvement in operational performance of the company.

The ratings agency has upgraded due to the timely commissioning of aluminium dross processing project (hot and cold) at Jharsuguda (Odisha), aluminium recovery plant and value added slag conditioner plant during FY21.

Samsung electronics’ Gulf arm launched a new initiative to promote sustainability and providing customers with an opportunity to safeguard the environment.

Samsung in collaboration with the world's largest electronics recycler in Dubai, Enviroserve, is now collecting mobile phones from any brand across the UAE and assuming responsibility for the recycling process as part of the “Samsung Recycling Program.”

Malaysia’s imports of aluminium scrap from the US stood at 41,100 tonnes in March 2021, marking an increase of 68.44% from 24,400 tonnes in March 2020, as updated by the US Census Bureau. The volumes climbed by 11.99% month-on-month basis from 36,700 tonnes in February.

In the first quarter of 2021, Malaysia imported 110,000 tonnes of aluminium scrap, from 73,400 tonnes imported in the first quarter of 2020.

Aludium announced its 2020 Sustainability Report. The report outlines aluminium recycling as one of the pillars of its business leadership. The company’s global recycling capacity reached 200 KT in 2020 due to major investments.

The company, which focused on increasing its ability to produce recycled aluminium, said that its Amorebieta plant's DC3 multi-chamber furnace had increased the percentage of scrap recycled by 300% from 2018 in 2020.
