A team of undergraduate students from one of India's premiere tech schools, the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) - Kharagpur, has designed their fourth Formula 1 racing car prototype with chassis made from aluminium alloys. The new racing car ‘K-3′ will compete in the Formula Student Russia 2016 to be held in September this year. Around 30 teams comprising 800 students from all over the world will participate in the racing event.
TeamKART is a students’ project under the Department of Mechanical Engineering of IIT Kharagpur that involves designing and manufacturing Formula style cars. So far the team has built four such cars and participated in four international competitions.
“Our fourth car K-3 is our lightest car weighing at just 220 kgs. It is also fuel efficient providing a fuel efficiency of 15 kmpl in comparison to the earlier 2 kmpl that we got from K-2. We have started designing of our fifth car K-4, whose manufacturing has been slated in August 2016,” said Ketan Mundhra, team leader TeamKART.
The team used aluminium alloys to build the chassis of their racing car prototype and an all-new damper-suspension system to provide the car with more flexibility in tuning. The use of the light metal along with carbon fibre body panels has helped them ensure that the weight of the car is kept restricted at 220 kg.
The Formula Student Russia 2016 edition will be held in Togliati between September 8 and 11.
