Sustainability is at the heart of everything Nespresso does. The company is committed to making a positive impact on both people and the planet while continuing to offer customers some of the finest coffees in the world. In keeping with this philosophy, Nespresso Canada and Éco Entreprises Québec are set to expand their ‘green bag’ coffee capsule recycling program to cover all municipalities across Quebec.
The initiative aims to make recycling easier for consumers while aligning with the province’s new extended producer responsibility (EPR) regulations. As selective collection systems undergo modernisation in Quebec, Nespresso customers are encouraged to place their used coffee capsules in the green recycling bags. These bags are provided free with every Nespresso online order and are also available in Nespresso boutiques and through the Nespresso Club.
“The expanded rollout of the green bag programme throughout the province has been a Nespresso priority for years. In fact, Quebec was where the green bag programme was first launched in 2016. We are proud of the enthusiasm this programme has generated among consumers and municipalities, and of being able to make this easy recycling solution available province-wide. For over a decade, Nespresso has been playing a key role in reducing waste in the country by implementing innovative recycling solutions. Combining quality and sustainability has always been at the heart of our DNA,” said Carlos Oyanguren, president of Nespresso Canada.
Once filled, the green bags can be placed directly into residential recycling bins along with other recyclables. The aluminium capsules are then recycled, while the used coffee grounds are processed through biomethanisation within the province.
Quebec becomes the second Canadian province, after Prince Edward Island, to implement the green bag program province-wide. Nespresso expects the initiative to roll out across the entire country eventually. Several areas in Ontario, New Brunswick, and Nova Scotia have also adopted the program to promote simple and efficient coffee capsule recycling.
Building on this momentum, a growing number of UK supermarkets are introducing dedicated coffee pod recycling facilities. Morrisons has announced a nationwide rollout of Podback collection points, providing free recycling bags at its customer service desks. Similarly, Asda has launched a coffee pod recycling service across more than 600 stores, encouraging shoppers to make pod recycling a regular part of their shopping habits.
