PT Bintan Alumina Indonesia: Construction of 1 million tonnes capacity alumina refinery in Galang Batang Special Economic Zone accomplished

The construction of the alumina refinery with a production capacity of 1 million tonnes per year in the Galang Batang Special Economic Zone has been accomplished, as confirmed by President Director of PT Bintan Alumina Indonesia (BAI), Santoni.

The bauxite to alumina processing plant with 98% content has already completed its commissioning period.

On 15th June, Santoni said:  “The results of the production trial are good. We can already produce full production in June.”

He expressed his gratitude to all stakeholders who have supported the development of the Galang Batang SEZ.

PT Bintan Alumina Indonesia (BAI) is a Business Entity for the Development and Management of the Galang Batang SEZ in Bintan, Riau Islands Province.

“Now we are building another Alumina Refinery with a capacity of 1 million tonnes per year. The development progress is 30%. If all goes well, in early 2022 the construction will be completed and production trials will begin," Santoni added.

“The plan is that PT Bintan Alumina Indonesia (BAI) will conduct its first export in July 2021. A total of 25,000 tonnes of alumina powder will be shipped to Malaysia through the SEZ port of Galang Batang.  The port that we have built in the Galang Batang SEZ has been completed, and the first export is carried out from this port.”

PT BAI has registered investment of Rp. 14 trillion in the Galang Batang SEZ, as of Q1 2021. The workforce that has been absorbed is around 4,000 people. The investment is utilized to develop an alumina refinery with a capacity of 1 million tonnes per year, a steam power plant (PLTU), water reservoir, port, coal gas plant, and regional development.

By the end of 2021, the investment value is predicted to rise to Rp 17 trillion. Presently, PT BAI is developing a second alumina refinery plant, which will propel its production capacity to 2 million tonnes per year.

The development for Galang Batang SEZ will pursue by further building additional power plant units and an aluminium smelter until 2027.
