Sridhar Patra, the chairman and managing director of NALCO, has pointed out this week that the supply-demand mismatch in the aluminium market is expected to grow in 2022. According to him, a mismatch in the global aluminium market may keep the metal prices high, with prices hovering around USD 2,600-2,700 per tonne.
The American industrial corporation producing aluminium Alcoa Corp has inked a pre-agreement with Capital Energy, a Spanish renewables company, to secure some 573 MW of wind power for its San Ciprian aluminium smelter in the north-western part of Spain. The supply of wind energy to the Galicia-based San Ciprian aluminium smelter is set to commence in 2024.
In the wake of sustained expansion and success, Aluminium Bahrain B.S.C. (Alba), the world's biggest smelter outside of China and an employer of choice in the region, announced record-breaking 600-plus staff promotions for 2021 during a ceremony conducted on December 29, 2021, at the Company's premises. According to a report this week, the Romanian aluminium producer Alro’s trade unions and also the employees of the company and its suppliers will rally a protest on January 6, 2022, to show a protest against the management’s decision to axe production of 60% and functionalize with 40% of production capacity due to the surge in energy prices.
Vedanta Aluminium Business has entered into an agreement with GEAR (Gemini Equipment and Rentals Private Limited) India to install one of the largest fleets of lithium-ion battery-powered electric forklifts. Vedanta is the first in Indian aluminium industry to undertake such an initiative to replace its diesel-fuelled forklifts. Vedanta will commission the 23 new green fleet forklifts in a phased manner over the next few months at its aluminium smelter in Jharsuguda, Odisha.

With its joint venture partner, Alcoa Corporation, South32 (S32) plans to reactivate the Alumar aluminium smelter (Brazil Aluminium). The first production is scheduled for the June 2022 quarter, with a maximum capacity of 447,000 tonnes per annum from its three potlines projected in the March 2023 quarter.
PHD Chamber of Commerce and Industry (PHDCCI) has urged the govt. of India to brush up on the cost structure of the Indian aluminium industry and boost competitiveness in the upcoming Union Budget 2022, which is scheduled in the next month. PHDCCI has recommended to reduce 2.5% of the basic customs duty on the critical raw materials like - Calcined Petroleum Coke, Raw Petroleum Coke, Caustic Soda Lye, Aluminium Fluoride and Green Anode/ Pre-Baked Carbon Anode.
South32, a diversified mining firm, is exploring solutions for securing green power at the Hillside Aluminium smelter in the Kwazulu-Natal (KZN) area of South Africa. Given the introduction of carbon border taxes and end-user demand for green aluminium, if South32 is unable to secure an inexpensive supply of low-carbon power for Hillside, this vital KZN business risks will become uncompetitive in the international market over time.

The energy and carbon impact of aluminium manufacturing in North America has decreased to its lowest point in history, says a new third-party critical-reviewed life cycle assessment (LCA) study. Primary aluminium manufacturing has reduced its carbon footprint by 49% since 1991, while recycled aluminium production has reduced its carbon impact by 60%.

National Aluminium Company Limited (NALCO) significantly increased its aluminium ingot and aluminium products prices with effect from Friday, January 7. The hike was in line with the LME aluminium benchmark price rise by US$50.50 per tonne on January 5. NALCO’s aluminium ingot price saw a surge of INR 9,100 per tonne to stand at INR 247,450- 250,950 per tonne as of January 7. On January 1, the metal price ranged between INR 238,350–241,850 per tonne after a cut of INR 4,200 per tonne.

According to the Shanghai Metals Market, social inventories of primary aluminium in China decreased for the seventh week in a row by 23,000 tonnes across eight major consumption areas, including SHFE warrants. Thus, the inventories came in at 776,000 tonnes as of Thursday, January 6. In Wuxi, primary aluminium inventories plunged by 11,000 tonnes week-on-week to stand at 275,000 tonnes as of January 6, followed by the decline of 5,000 tonnes in Gongyi to stand at 75,000 tonnes.
The London Metal Exchange opened this week on Tuesday, January 4, with LME aluminium cash (bid) price and LME aluminium official settlement price surge by US$9.50 per tonne to US$2,815 per tonne and US$2,815.50 per tonne, respectively. With continuous hike throughout the week, the prices close at US$2,919 per tonne and US$2,919.50 per tonne on Friday, January 7.
