Hydro reaches key milestone in development of zero-emission aluminium technology
Hydro has produced aluminium using its new HalZero electrolysis technology for the first time. The milestone marks an important step in Hydro’s work to develop a new primary aluminium production process with the aim of achieving net-zero emissions. Since 2016, Hydro’s technology teams have been working to develop HalZero, an entirely new process for producing primary aluminium, which could replace the technology used globally today, first patented in 1886. The new technology is based on converting alumina into aluminium chloride before electrolysis in a process designed to keep chlorine and carbon in closed loops. Constellium today announced that its extrusion and automotive structures plants in Gottmadingen and Singen, Germany, will source locally produced solar electricity under a long-term Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with the community of Gottmadingen. Under the agreement, Constellium will receive the full electricity output of the Katzental solar park over a 10-year period, produced locally in the immediate vicinity of the Gottmadingen and Singen plants.
