Hydro reaches key milestone in development of zero-emission aluminium technology
Hydro has produced aluminium using its new HalZero electrolysis technology for the first time. The milestone marks an important step in Hydro’s work to develop a new primary aluminium production process with the aim of achieving net-zero emissions. Since 2016, Hydro’s technology teams have been working to develop HalZero, an entirely new process for producing primary aluminium, which could replace the technology used globally today, first patented in 1886. The new technology is based on converting alumina into aluminium chloride before electrolysis in a process designed to keep chlorine and carbon in closed loops. Alunorte has temporarily cut alumina production to 50 per cent after disruptions in natural gas availability affected operations at the refinery. Natural gas supply constraints have prompted Alunorte to introduce contingency measures at its alumina refinery, as the company works to manage the impact of reduced gas availability on operations.
