For the second time in a row, PPG participated in the national “Million Cans Recycling Contest.” This year, the packaging company in Pittsburgh collaborated with more than 100 second-grade students from the Environmental Charter School (ECS). The aim here was to help these students collect and recycle aluminium beverage cans to celebrate World Recycling Day.
{alcircleadd}For the academic year 2025-25, these ECS students have collected above 30 thousand cans. The competition, The Million Cans Recycling, included 54 schools, which aimed at inspiring elementary students and getting their involvement in aluminium can recycling.
The Can Manufacturers Institute (CMI) organised the initiative along with The Recycling Society, which unites elementary schools, scrapyards and aluminium can producers and suppliers. The purpose of this initiative was to promote the awareness of the circular economy that aluminium, as a metal, holds.
The initiative also offered schools financial incentives and possible education on sustainability. This campaign is set to run until April 30 and will end with a celebration event in May to honour the top-performing schools that took part in the contest.

Meghan Barrera, PPG director, global strategic marketing, Packaging Coatings, stated, "At PPG, our mission to protect and beautify the world includes recycling and there’s no better time to celebrate that work than Global Recycling Day. Aluminium cans are infinitely recyclable, making them a sustainable packaging solution. Together with our local and industry partners, we’re proud to play a role in helping children build lifelong recycling habits while contributing to a nationwide sustainability effort that needs attention in the US."
Pennsylvania merely recycles 25 per cent of its aluminium beverage cans, which is deemed to be lower than what the US does, whose average can recycling is 43 per cent. For this, as per the data of Eunomia's 50 States of Recycling Report, the US is ranked 18th among all the states.
Globally, the gap is estimated to be much wider, with the difference seen in Europe, reporting a 76.3 per cent recycling rate. This directly reflects the benefits due to the robust recycling policies within the region.

If Pennsylvania successfully boosts its aluminium can recovery rates, it could potentially generate around USD 107 million in economic benefits each year, not to mention making a significant dent in greenhouse gas emissions.
In the US, eight out of the ten states that excel in recycling aluminium cans have adopted bottle deposit laws. Maine stands as the leader and holds an 83 per cent recycling rate, which is marked to be the highest for any material across all states.
As March 18 is marked as Global Recycling Day, the Pittsburgh Penguins, CMI, the representatives from PPG, along with The Recycling Society and Michael Brothers Companies, joined the ECS students. The event delved into educational presentations, prize giveaways and special appearances by Iceburgh, the Penguins’ mascot, along with Hero the Hawk, the ECS’s own mascot.
