Festivalgoers were actively encouraged throughout the weekend to recycle their packaging responsibly and avoid single-use plastics. The campaign aimed to raise awareness about the importance of proper recycling and sustainability practices.
In a celebratory Facebook post, Every Can Counts shared highlights from their successful campaign at the Download Festival, expressing appreciation to festivalgoers for their enthusiastic participation.
“Download Festival, you absolutely smashed it,” the post began, as the organisation recapped an action-packed weekend dedicated to promoting aluminium can recycling. Throughout the event, the team engaged attendees by collecting cans, zipping around in motorised soapboxes and spreading their core message: #MetalRecyclesForever.
The impact was impressive. Over 25,000 cans were collected for recycling during the festival. More than 1,700 attendees, affectionately dubbed "Downloaders," participated in a fun and educational recycling quiz. Festivalgoers who embraced the recycling spirit were rewarded with t-shirts, recycled aluminium keyrings, and temporary tattoos, earning the title of this year’s "recycling legends."
Adding to the excitement, Canzee, the programme’s recycling mascot, made appearances and connected with fans or “Fanzees”, creating memorable moments. The team’s eye-catching motorised soapboxes also drew attention as they cruised around the venue, amplifying the recycling message.
By the end of the festival on Sunday, the specially designated DOWNLOAD can cages were filled to the brim with empty drink cans, showcasing the community’s collective effort. The post closed with a heartfelt shoutout to everyone who made their empty cans count at this year’s event.
Every Can Counts operates as a communication programme with the mission of promoting the recycling of empty drink cans. It is funded through collaboration between drink can manufacturers, the aluminium recycling sector and beverage brands. The programme’s overarching goal is to achieve a 100 per cent recycling rate for drink cans.
To achieve this, Every Can Counts partners with organisations, businesses and events across the UK and beyond, offering guidance and free communication materials to engage the public in the environmental benefits of recycling cans.
