Middle Point Landfill sets up program to deal with overheated aluminum
Officials at Middle Point Landfill today said they are managing elevated temperatures in a portion of the facility caused by the oxidation of aluminum waste buried there years ago.

Certain waste material from the aluminum manufacturing and recycling process has become problematic for some landfills. Up until 2007, this waste was accepted at Middle Point in accordance with the landfill’s classification as a Class 1 landfill and as approved by the Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation (TDEC). In 2007, the landfill stopped accepting aluminum waste material due to a change in company policy.
