Midas Pattern cuts cost of cast aluminium rotomould tooling

Bedford-based Midas Pattern Company claims particular expertise in the manufacture of cast aluminium rotational mould tools for the manufacture of large, rugged and robust components in many sectors including sports and leisure, marine and retail promotion.

Examples of projects are outdoor children's playground equipment and permanent dockside equipment for yachts and pleasure craft.

By combining the latest three-dimensional CAD and CNC technologies with the skills of traditional toolmakers, the company looks to deliver “the best of both worlds” to its rotational mould tool clients.

In the case of very large tooling, Midas engineers break down the original large configuration (as large as 4m long in some cases), which would be very expensive to cast in one piece (and also challenging in terms of maintaining joint line fit and overall dimensional accuracy), into a number of smaller components, which are then jointed together. This dramatically reduces the cost of the tooling, by reducing the sizes and therefore costs of the castings.

Machining, straightening and fitting these castings accurately then ensures that the final large tool exhibits all the accuracy expected of smaller tools – including the incorporation of recesses for such items as logos and nameplates.

Midas sources aluminium castings of the highest quality to ensure the necessary straightness and freedom from porosity throughout the toolmaking process.
