Metlen invests €25m to expand recycled aluminium capacity in Greece

Metlen Energy & Metals PLC is investing EUR 25 million in its recycled aluminium production facility EP.AL.ME. in Greece, targeting higher processing capacity and greater use of complex aluminium scrap streams.

The investment will fund automated sorting, processing and melting equipment at EP.AL.ME., which Metlen describes as Greece’s largest independent recycled aluminium producer. The project will allow the facility to process more complex scrap, including post-consumer aluminium recovered from end-of-life products.

The expansion will connect EP.AL.ME. more closely with Metlen’s Aluminium of Greece facility. EP.AL.ME. will manage the collection, sorting and pre-processing of aluminium scrap, while Aluminium of Greece will provide the production scale needed to incorporate recycled metal into finished products.

Metlen expects the combined operations to support total production of more than 250,000 tonnes once the development is fully completed.

The company highlighted the energy advantage of aluminium recycling, noting that producing recycled aluminium requires approximately 5 per cent of the energy needed to produce primary aluminium.

The investment also supports Europe’s push toward greater industrial resilience and circularity. Metlen said the project aligns with initiatives including the European Union’s Critical Raw Materials Act and Clean Industrial Deal.

By linking EP.AL.ME.’s scrap-processing capabilities with Aluminium of Greece’s production operations, Metlen expects to create greater synergies across its aluminium business while strengthening its position in the European aluminium industry.
