Malaysia’s imports of aluminium scrap likely to grow in 2017

Malaysia is the 25th largest importer in the world. The country’s imports of commodities have increased during the last five years.

Apart from being a net exporter of metal scrap, Malaysia imports substantial amount of scrap from countries around the world.  Aluminium scrap import by Malaysia has surged significantly over the last two years, and this trend is expected to grow further by the end of 2017. The USA is the top exporter of aluminium scrap to the country.

According to the recent estimates, in the year 2015, Malaysia imported 93747 tonnes of aluminium scrap. The value of import was USD 106.83 million for the same amount. In the year 2016, the amount increased to 136664 tonnes and the value of import stood at USD 150 million.

In the year 2017, Malaysia is estimated to import 165794 tonnes of aluminium scrap and the value of import is estimated to stand at USD 194.61 million. The total volume and value are expected to grow noticeably this year.

In 2016, the USA exported 56957 tonnes of aluminium scrap to Malaysia (estimated). Japan, Singapore, Australia, Taiwan, and Hong Kong were the other suppliers of aluminium scrap to the country.
