LME aluminium price loses momentum, drops below USD 3,500/t despite shrinking inventories

After remaining above USD 3,500 per tonne at the June 12 session, the LME aluminium price dropped across all the pricing segments, barring the live warrants and alumina price, on the June 15 session.

The LME aluminium cash bid as well as offer price eased 3.3 per cent day-on-day on June 15. While the bid went down from USD 3,535 per tonne to USD 3418.5 per tonne, the offer shifted from USD 3,536 per tonne to USD 3419.5 per tonne.

In the near-term contracts, both the LME aluminium three-month bid and offer prices reported a drop of 2.86 per cent. While the bid slipped from USD 3,531 per tonne on June 12 to USD 3,430 per tonne on June 15, the offer eased from USD 3,532 per tonne to USD 3431 per tonne.

In terms of the longer-dated contracts, both the Dec-27 bid and offer prices recorded a 1.29 per cent decline over the previous session. The bid closed at USD 3,208 per tonne, slipping from USD 3,250 per tonne, and the offer slumped to USD 3,213 per tonne to USD 3,255 per tonne.

The LME aluminium three-month Asian Reference Price closed at USD 3379.5 on June 15, down 4.4 per cent from USD 3,535 per tonne on June 12.

LME aluminium stocks recorded a further decline as of June 15. The opening stocks slipped from 322,000 tonnes to 319,925 tonnes, marking a 0.64 per cent decrease.

Live Warrants, on the other hand, rose from 250,525 tonnes to 250,300 tonnes, representing a rise of 0.9 per cent.

Cancelled warrants, however, amounted to 69,200 tonnes, softening 0.29 per cent from 69,400 tonnes.

LME alumina platts closed at USD 305.57 per tonne on June 15, indicating a 0.19 per cent gain over the USD 305 per tonne recorded at the June 12 close.
