JNARDDC develops a low-cost process for the production of high-purity alumina

According to a recent report, Jawaharlal Nehru Aluminium Research Development and Design Centre (JNARDDC), Nagpur has invented a low-cost process of producing 3N purity alumina (99.9%) at lab scale.

The focus is on preparing the alpha phase of 3N pure nano-alumina at lowermost possible temperature. High purity nano-alumina finds extensive applications in translucent tubes for high-pressure sodium lamps, single crystal materials, high-strength ceramic tools and abrasives for magnetic tape, among others.

Sponsored by Department of Science and Technology (DST) New Delhi, the project found that properties like low-friction, high wear-resistance, thermal and electrical insulation ability, and broad chemical compatibility make high purity alumina a more than useful option in military and aerospace-based applications, engine components, heat shields, electrical insulators, pump and valve components and satellite and radar electronics systems.

The successful outcome of the project came after a year of dedication by a team of scientists, who developed the process know-how of the low-cost preparation of 3N pure alumina suitable for Light Emitting Diode (LED) and Semiconductor applications at lab scale.

According to the report, Dr Priyanka Nayar, Investigator and team have worked under the able guidance of Dr Anupam Agnihotri, Director, JNARDDC to make this project successful at lab scale.
