
According to the US Geological Survey, India imported 102,900 tonnes of aluminium scrap from the United States during the fourth quarter of 2022, which reflected a sequential downfall of 20.11 per cent from 128,800 million tonnes in Q3 2022. In total, India imported 231,700 million tonnes of aluminium scrap from the US during the second half of 2022, up by 2.07 per cent from 227,000 million tonnes in H1 2022.

In December 2022, India sourced 33,300 tonnes of aluminium scrap from the United States, compared to 28,800 tonnes in November. That represented a month-on-month growth of 15.63 per cent, found USGS. But on a year-on-year calculation, the import volume stood 21.28 per cent less than 42,300 tonnes.
In the full-year 2022, India’s aluminium scrap imports from the US totalled 459,000 tonnes, reflecting an increase of 17,000 tonnes or 89.62 per cent from 442,000 tonnes a year ago.
In December, India emerged as the highest importer of aluminium scrap from the United States, beating Malaysia which ranked first in November securing 33,400 tonnes compared to India’s import volume of 28,800 tonnes. In December, Malaysia imported 27,300 tonnes of scrap from the US, down by 18.26 per cent from the previous month.
The United States’ total aluminium scrap exports amounted to 484,000 tonnes in Q4 2022, bringing the total exports in the year to 2 million tonnes versus 2.10 million tonnes in 2021.
In December 2022, the US exported 152,000 tonnes of aluminium scrap, down by 8,000 tonnes or 5 per cent M-o-M from 160,000 tonnes, and 27,000 tonnes or 15.08 per cent less Y-o-Y than 179,000 tonnes.
