
India’s aluminium scrap imports from the United States recorded a sharp fall in January 2022 by 31,000 tonnes or 73.29 per cent month-on-month, found the US Geological Survey. From 42,300 tonnes in December 2021, India’s aluminium scrap imports from the US plunged to 11,300 tonnes in the preceding month. In December, the imports dropped by 6,600 tonnes or 113.50 per cent from 48,900 tonnes.

As the above graph shows, India’s aluminium scrap imports from the US in January 2022 also registered a downfall of 53.11 per cent or 12,800 tonnes year-on-year from 24,100 tonnes.
In the final quarter (Q4) of 2021, India imported 147,600 tonnes of aluminium scrap versus 125,500 tonnes in the previous quarter. That was a decrease of 22,100 tonnes or 14.97 per cent quarter-on-quarter.
India’s total aluminium scrap imports from the US in the entire year of 2021 amounted to 442,000 tonnes.
In January 2022, the United States exported 32,300 tonnes of aluminium scrap in total, which reflected a nosedive of 81.96 per cent from 179,000 tonnes in December 2021. On a year-on-year calculation, the United States’ total aluminium scrap exports in January 2022 edged a fall of 79 per cent from 153,000 tonnes.
After India, Mexico was the second-largest aluminium scrap export destination of the United States in January 2022, which secured 5,210 tonnes versus 11,700 tonnes in the previous month.
