Volvo Trucks, one of the world's largest truck brands and user of aluminium for vehicle manufacturing, believes market is finally looking up for them in the medium and heavy commercial vehicle segments in India. The company having more than 50 per cent share in the country’s mining segment is hopeful about making a mark in trucks for the construction industry now.

In a recent interview, Senior Vice-President, Volvo Trucks International, India, Helene Mellquist said that India, for them is one of the more exciting markets and that it offers enormous scope of growth.

Volvo made a difference to the mining industry players in India by the durability of the robotic vehicles which in turn ensured minimum downtime for them. The company now wants to repeat the same success story for the construction sector by bringing in breakthrough solutions in the premium truck category.

According to Mellquist, the government’s focus on large infrastructure projects and coming up of age e-commerce in India is going to help Volvo in the sale of its premium range trucks.

Implementation of the Goods and Services Tax, Mellquist thinks, is further going to help India prosper in more than one way economically. “GST is something good. With GST, you are taking a step towards the one federation. It is important for us,” she said.

Volvo has been using aluminium in the chassis and other parts of its commercial vehicles in order to reduce weight and make the vehicles less carbon di oxide-spitting while increasing their speed.  The chassis of its SuperTruck (2017) was built entirely of aluminium, which halved the chassis weight and contributed to an overall tractor-trailer weight reduction of 3,200 pounds.
