
Hydro Rein, a renewable energy solutions provider, and Macquarie Asset Management’s Green Investment Group (GIG), a specialist green investor, have signed an agreement to form a joint venture company Feijão. The company will build and operate a combined wind and solar power project, with a capacity of 586 megawatt, in the northeast of Brazil.

As per the announcement by Hydro, Feijão will supply 100 per cent of the electricity required by Hydro’s bauxite mine Paragominas and replace the usage of coal at Hydro’s Alunorte alumina refinery by 2030 to further reduce carbon emissions. Both Paragominas and Alunorte have signed a long-term power purchase agreement with Feijão under Brazilian self-production structure.
The hybrid wind and solar project is coming up at Piauí and Pernambuco, consisting of 80 turbines with a combined capacity of 456 megawatt in phase one. In phase two, the project will add 130 megawatt of solar power production.
Final investment decision for the wind farm is to be taken in the fourth quarter of 2022, while for the solar project in a later stage. Total capital expenditure for the former is estimated at US$700 million, to which Hydro Rein will contribute 49.9 per cent and the remaining by the Macquarie Green Investment Group Renewable Energy Fund 2.
