Hyderabad to adopt green building code boosting demand for aluminium

The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation plans to popularise the Energy Conservation Building Code, beginning with 25 model buildings, both government and commercial, being made reference models for others. Resultantly, the use of aluminium profiles, panels and other extrusion products for construction will grow given the fact- the white metal is recyclable and helps in reducing carbon footprint.

The code will apply to buildings constructed on 1,000 sq mt of land, with built-up area of over 2,000 sq mt, according to Hyderabad Mayor Bonthu Rammohan.

“Efforts are on to streamline the functioning of various government departments and construction activity in Telangana and the energy conservation code will be helpful,” he said.

Knowledge partners

Telangana and Andhra Pradesh adopted the mandatory Energy Conservation Building Code (ECBC) for commercial buildings in 2014. The Administrative Staff College of India and the Natural Resources Defence Council (NRDC) are engaged as knowledge partners to develop the code and guide through its adoption.

As per the code, multiplexes, hospitals, hotels, and convention centres have to comply with ECBC. The code offers star rating system.

Growing demand for aluminium construction system

With buildings accounting for about 30 per cent of the country’s electricity consumption and the built-up area growing at a rapid rate, the Energy Conservation an Building Code launched by the Bureau of Energy Efficiency of the Union Ministry of Power is aimed at addressing the important aspect of energy conservation.

This, in trun, is expected to boost the demand for the 'green' metal aluminium and the products made out of it which have been proved to be perfectly suited for modern construction in more than one way, in the recent times.
