Govt to select consultant for preparing National Aluminium Plan: Mining Secretary

Aiming to achieve optimal growth in the aluminium sector, the Mines Ministry will shortly appoint a consultant to prepare a National Aluminium Plan.
"Eight consultancy firms had responded to the expression of interest we sought earlier. We have shortlisted five among them and they have made detailed presentation to us on May 7.
They are being evaluated for selecting the one which will help us to prepare the Plan," Mines Secretary Vishwapati Trivedi told PTI.
The short-listed five are -- Ernst & Young, ICRA, KPMG, PricewaterhouseCoopers and Nielson.
Trivedi is heading the core committee which has the task of selecting the consultant.
The National Aluminium Plan, a draft of which has already been prepared by Aluminium Association of India, is aimed at addressing needs of the sector for an optimal planned growth required to meet the growing needs of the domestic market and also to maintain a competitive edge globally.
"As this would require detailed consultations, it was decided that the task of revising the Plan may be entrusted to a reputed consultant to be appointed after necessary approval," Trivedi said.
The Plan will address environmental issues, research and development, promotional activities, highlighting advantages of aluminium in various applications.
"Aluminium sector is in an expansion mode. The objective of the plan is to incorporate the entire sectoral perspectives from national interest. The document will contain an in-depth analysis of issues concerning the sector on which government''s intervention may be required with sufficient justification," he added.
In the country, Aditya Birla Group''s flagship Hindalco is the largest producer of aluminium, with about 40 per cent of the total 17.36 lakh tonne installed capacity. Sterlite has the second highest capacity and state-owned Nalco ranks third.
India''s per capita aluminium consumption is abysmally low at 1.5 kg compared to Germany''s 38 kg, Japan''s 30 kg and 12 kg in China.
