Germany’s aluminium cans export volume to see a year-on-year decline in CY2018

EDITED BY : DEBANJALI SENGUPTA 2MINS READ

Recyclability of metal is one of the key factors that has been constantly driving the consumption of the metal cans in the market, including aluminium cans because this particular non-ferrous metal is nontoxic by nature and can be easily processed, handled and distributed. In 2017, the metal cans market was valued at US$46.35 billion and is expected to reach a value of US$ 56.38 billion by 2023 at a CAGR of 3.32 per cent.

Germany, being one of the largest aluminium exporting countries, supplies a lion share of aluminium cans all over the world. But unfortunately, it has been noticed that over the two years the country’s aluminium cans export volume is incessantly decreasing. In 2016, Germany had exported a total volume of 95,543 tonnes of aluminium cans, while in 2017, the volume stood at 86,093 tonnes, down by 9 per cent. In 2018, this volume is estimated to shrink further to 74, 828 tonnes, which means it would be 21 per cent down from 2016 and 13 per cent from 2017, according to the global export-import data.

Countries like France, Czech Republic, Belgium, Austria, and the US are some of the key importers of aluminium cans from Germany. All these countries are expected to import approximately 7614 tonnes, 3248 tonnes, 5428 tonnes, 3211 tonnes, and 1284 tonnes of aluminium can respectively this calendar year.

The export to the United States is expected to decline from 2953 tonnes in 2017, up from 2866 from 2016, to 2866 tonnes in 2018. The reason could be because of the 10 per cent and 25 per cent higher export tariffs on aluminium and steel imposed by the Trump administration on the European Union early June. On 22nd of June, the European Commission levied countermeasures on the US as a retaliatory act.

EU Trade Commissioner Cecilia Malmström said: "We did not want to be in this position. However, the unilateral and unjustified decision of the US to impose steel and aluminium tariffs on the EU means that we are left with no other choice.”
