Gekröse, the enormous lacquered aluminium sculpture crafted by Austrian artist Franz West has been added to Doha Corniche, a waterfront promenade along Doha Bay. The monumental sculpture is considered one of Franz West's gigantic creations during his career as an artist.
The aluminium sculpture is painted in a vibrant shade of pink. It has a complicated design emanates an unmistakable presence and unquestionably begs for photos. The piece of art is located at Corniche's Theatre Park, in front of the famous Umbrella Park. Gekröse joins newly revealed art pieces near the Doha Corniche, including "Dugong," a polychrome mirror-polished stainless-steel sculpture created by well-known American artist Jeff Koons.
The artwork is a part of the Qatar Museum's initiative to hire renowned local and foreign artists to create brand-new public works of art that will be displayed around the country. Since its introduction in August last year, many public artworks and exhibitions have been inaugurated.
These include the vivid sculpture Doha Mountains by Ugo Rondinone at 974 Stadium, the installation "Us, Her, Him" by Lebanese artist Najla El Zein at Flag Plaza, and tiny replicas of Qatar's architectural marvels, "The Doha Modern Playground" by Shezad Dawood at Al Masrah Park.
