In collaboration with the UAE Ministry of Climate Change and Environment (MoCCAE), FrieslandCampina, a leading global dairy cooperative and the proprietor of the Rainbow brand in the Middle East, is launching an extensive waste management and recycling initiative in the UAE. In this ground-breaking endeavour, FrieslandCampina is dedicated to fostering a recycling culture for aluminium single-use plastic and other materials like tin.
The initiative not only envisions environmental sustainability but also strives for ongoing interaction with students in the UAE through dynamic workshops and masterclasses. Partnering with Emirates Steel, Rainbow is committed to promoting the reuse of tin cans by implementing a meticulous treatment process. This innovative collaboration ensures that these cans are expertly reshaped, ready to embark on a new sustainability lifecycle.
Aluminum, a versatile metal widely employed across diverse sectors, boasts the remarkable quality of being infinitely recyclable while retaining its original properties. This unique characteristic positions aluminium as a highly sought-after material. "Our collaboration with FrieslandCampina is an important step in the UAE's journey towards a greener future. The private sector are vital partners in the UAE's climate action efforts, and we value their contribution to our climate goals. COP28, which is being hosted in Dubai, will underline the strength of collaboration and innovations, such as the Recycle to Green Initiative, as tangible pathways to addressing the climate crisis. By engaging students, we are further highlighting the role that youth plays in promoting environmental sustainability," said Her Excellency Engineer Othaibah Al Qaydi, Acting Assistant Undersecretary for the Sustainable Communities Sector at the Ministry of Climate Change and the Environment.
Aligned with the UAE's waste management vision and the 'We The UAE 2031' environmental protection plan, this initiative signifies a significant step towards sustainability. FrieslandCampina is dedicated to enhancing its waste collection efforts, aiming to gather 2 million Rainbow tins, equivalent to 100 tons, in 2023. This commitment represents a substantial increase from the 2022 collection figures of six tonnes and 110,000 tonnes.
Implemented by FrieslandCampina in collaboration with the Ministry, Emirates Environmental Group, and RECAPP by Veolia, the campaign is set to engage 30,000 students, referred to as 'Green Champions,' across a total of 27 schools by the year's end. This initiative is a proactive measure to cultivate a new generation of sustainability leaders in the UAE, contributing to the broader national environmental protection goals outlined in the 'We The UAE 2031' vision.
Habiba Al Mar’ashi, Co-Founder & Chairperson of Emirates Environmental Group added, "The UAE's students are the sustainability leaders of the future. To pave the way for a more sustainable tomorrow, we must empower their choices today. By nurturing their eco-consciousness and supporting their sustainable endeavours, we are sowing the seeds of a greener future. We are pleased to be collaborating with FrieslandCampina on this journey, a company that has sustainability at the heart of its function.”
