The international export-import data shows the aluminium scrap export from France to Italy is on a steady rise since a sweeping growth of around 139 per cent from 43,822 tonnes in 2016 to 104,718 tonnes in 2017. In 2018, the country’s export amount to Italy was at 111,456 tonnes after growing by around 6.43 per cent from 2017. Backed on the increasing export volume, the value has also been rising over the years and this year is expected to be no exception. In 2017, along with the sweeping growth in France’s aluminium scrap export volume to Italy, the export value recorded a growth of 155 per cent from US$42 million in 2016 to US$107 million. In 2018, the value further grew to US$112 million, up 5 per cent from 2017. This year, it is expected to continue to rise by 6.25 per cent to US$119 million.

Belgium and Germany are the two other important destinations for France’s aluminium scrap export. In 2019, France is estimated to export 88,798 tonnes of aluminium scrap to Belgium, compared with 78,619 tonnes in 2018, while to Germany 58,387 tonnes, in contrast to 58,512 tonnes last year.
France is one of the key growth markets in the European aluminium industry. Packaging, building, and automobiles are some of the key sectors that drive the aluminium consumption in France and generate a substantial amount of scrap every year. The highest recycling percentages can be seen in the construction and transport sector of up to 95%, while the packaging sector is equally growing as well, due to the increased uses of foils and cans.
