Caustic soda plant setup in India: How aluminium growth is reshaping demand, costs and opportunities
Caustic soda may not be the most visible ingredient in aluminium production, but without it, the journey from bauxite to alumina would look very different. The chemical, also known as sodium hydroxide, is a crucial reagent in the Bayer process, where it helps dissolve alumina-bearing material in bauxite and separate it from impurities. The dissolved material is then processed to recover alumina, which ultimately feeds aluminium production. That makes caustic soda more than just another industrial chemical. Its availability, price and efficient use can influence the economics of alumina refining and, by extension, the wider aluminium value chain. As India expands its alumina and aluminium capacity, the requirement for this chemical is also becoming increasingly important. For companies...
Aluminum investment across North America and Asia: Who leads reshaping the next phase of growth?
Aluminum investment has been spreading across the entire value chain, from primary smelting and alumina refining to recycling, rolling, extrusion and battery foil, building more integrated and higher-value supply chains. During the past 5 years, the US and Canada in North America and China in Asia have been grabbing headlines pertaining to the aluminum industry. These updates have involved growth stories or have shed light on volatile market situations. How have these headlines contributed to a greater picture for the benefit of the aluminum industries of the two continents? Between 2021 and 2026, major projects across North America and Asia have targeted new primary capacity, lower-carbon production, recycled aluminum and higher-value downstream products. But the investment pattern is...

Florence Vial’s abaya sculpture highlights the importance of aluminium recycling
Nespresso, the popular at-home espresso machine brand, has been taking back used pods for recycling for a year now at its Abu Dhabi and Dubai stores. However, the French artist Florence Vial, who spent four years living in the UAE before returning home, explained that making a comment on recycling was only part of her motivation in creating the piece. “When I first arrived in Dubai, I was a bit lost and at that time everything was big and shiny and very attractive so I somehow related the Nespresso caps with that. They are brightly coloured, metallic and commercially attractive,” she says. “Recycling was also new in Dubai so I decided to talk about that issue.” After deciding on the material, Vial went to the Nespresso shop in Dubai and asked if she could collect the empty capsules. She...

Indonesia’s ban of exports of unprocessed aluminium ores in January stoked prices. The country is the world’s largest supplier of bauxite — the raw material used for aluminium production. The aluminium futures contract traded on the Multi Commodity Exchange (MCX), which moves in tandem with the global price, has risen about 17.5 per cent so far this year. It is currently trading near INR128.35 per kg. Demand for aluminium could be the strongest among the other bases metal complex driven by the auto sector next year, says a Citi Research report. Drop in crude oil prices affects aluminium prices
The falling oil prices have signaled a fall in aluminium prices as well, which has fallen the most in a week. Since aluminium is an energy intensive industry, the falling price of fuel significantly affects the cost of production, thereby affecting the price. Even though crude oil is not the primary source of energy for aluminium production, the fact that energy costs accounts for nearly 30 percent of the total cost of production, the falling oil prices may have a deflationary impact. “The entire commodity complex is having a reaction to crude and the U.S. dollar strength,” Bart Melek, the head of commodity strategy at TD Securities in Toronto, said by e-mail. “There is that potential on the headlines and less Petro dollars available to invest in the commodity space.” The London Metal...

Alumimium plant workers face 30% pay cuts after financial rescue
Workers at aluminium factor Aldel have been faced with average pay cuts of 30% following the company’s relaunch, broadcaster Nos said on Thursday. The new wages are in line with metal working sector pay scales but some people will earn up to €700 a month less, union officials say. Staff have rejected the pay deal, paving the way for further industrial unrest at the plant. The smelter, in Delfzijl in northern Groningen had to close at the end of last year because of financial problems, which had been made worse by the high cost of electricity. The company’s American major shareholder Gary Klesch came up with a new investment plan to keep the plant open, saving 600 direct and indirect jobs. ‘Aluminium smelter wages are certainly not the biggest cost to the company but the American owner...

CGAG teams up with Can for Kids’ for a new recycling program
