The aluminium industry in Portugal is going through a phase of modernisation, shaped by growing demand for sustainable industrial usage, with Exlabesa being a central figure.

Exlabesa Coimbra 2030 will be the new chapter of the company, including creating around 300 employment opportunities by 2030, aiming for a greater future with technological innovations and financial development.

Ramón Vázquez, Manager of Exlabesa, stated, "Today we are announcing our Exlabesa Coimbra 2030 expansion project. We are investing EUR 40 million in it. We intend to increase our production capacity from 16,000 to 45,000," while visiting the plant site on January 22.

The company operates 10 production sites across Spain (Valga, Headquarters), Germany (Minden), the US (Tifton), the UK (Doncaster), Portugal (Coimbra), France (Warneton), Poland (Tulowice) and Morocco (Tangier), serving as key production centres for architectural, industrial and profiles. The company is further planning to enlarge titsfacility to 30,000 sqm to achieve the production capacity targets (45,000 tonnes per year).

Three new aluminium extrusion presses, one with 13.71 megajoules and automated high-efficiency systems covering the material, heavy-duty industrial machines to transform aluminium billets into cross-sectional shapes, forcing through a steel die with the help of hydraulic pressure, are to be installed under the calculated strategy adaptation.

Industry 4.0 technologies, a virtual system with integrated digital and physical intelligence to revolutionise the manufacturing sectors with the help of data exchange, smart factories and automation, are an essential part of the company’s execution plan. Exlabesa has its exclusive Artificial Intelligence called EARS 4.0 (Exlabesa automated Reporting System), enabling real-time monitoring, data collection and processing for overseeing recycled aluminium billet production, profile extrusion molding and logistics analysis, which is a part of their advanced technological modification.

The global company, maintaining a diverse network of trading partners and allies like Metrovaseca, BM Aluminium, Wadds Ltd, Flandria Aluminium, etc., sets its eyes on expanding its footprint in the global market. Exlabesa already took sustainable measures, supporting the circular economy, low carbon footprint, recycling aluminium with more energy efficiency, and now forms its ambition towards using 90 per cent recycled aluminium (previously used 60 per cent) through efficiency enhancement and material reprocessing.

The current investment plan for Exlabesa’s production plant in Portugal will ensure a stable growth in the global as well as in the European market, besides supporting the nation’s domestic upliftment in sustainable aluminium production, marketing and work openings, inviting chances of future collaborations and foreign investments.
