Every Can Count research shows 93% of the UK population desire companies to improve the recyclability of packaging

EDITED BY : SARNALI CHAKRABORTY 3MINS READ

Nearly nine out of ten (93 per cent) of UK adults want businesses to do more to protect the environment, with the primary responsibility being on businesses to improve their packaging's recyclability. According to a recent study from Every Can Counts, 90 per cent of UK adults believe that companies should only use infinitely recyclable packaging, and 91 per cent believe that businesses should be held accountable for the packaging they use.

Fewer than seven in ten (65 percent) think customers should be responsible for the packaging they buy, demonstrating that corporations are not being held accountable for change. Consumers, on the other hand, are devoted to supporting the environmental programmes accessible to them, with 76 per cent prioritising waste reduction and 69 per cent urging individuals to recycle more.

“Drink cans are infinitely recyclable. This is the main message of our International Recycling Tour and the reason why we are working to inspire behaviour change and help reach 100% can recycling in Europe and beyond. This ambitious target can only be reached if consumers, brands, event organisers and local communities join forces to recycle every drink can, working together to build a more sustainable planet,” said  Chris Latham-Warde, Programme Manager for Every Can Counts.

With 61 per cent indicating they would want additional recycling bins in public spaces and 48 per cent favouring the implementation of deposit return systems, improved recycling infrastructure may go a long way toward alleviating the problem. Every Can Counts commissioned the study to coincide with its International Recycling Tour, which will take place in 17 countries to commemorate World Environment Day and encourage people to keep public outdoor places clean.

Two-thirds of Brits (67 per cent) say they always recycle their drink cans at home, but one third (33 per cent) say they don't. While individuals are out of the house, their recycling rates decrease considerably, with just 32% of respondents dropping their drink cans in recycling bins at work and 31% when they are out and about.

European Aluminium Industry Focus 2022

The purpose of this International Recycling Tour is to educate people that keeping public outdoor places clean requires teamwork. Small everyday actions, such as efficient garbage disposal, may contribute to a more sustainable lifestyle and a better world for all of us. In light of this, more than 100 recycling ambassadors will roam parks, cities and beaches in the countries like Austria, Brazil, Colombia, Czech Republic, etc donning their bright backpacks to help raise awareness of drink can recycling.
