Emal produces record 1.5m tonnes of hot metal

Emirates Aluminium (Emal), a joint venture between Abu Dhabi’s Mubadala and Dubai Aluminium (Dubal), yesterday announced the production of 1.5 million tonnes of hot metal.
In a statement, Emal said: “This is the fastest production achievement ever witnessed in the history of the global aluminium industry, with the last seven months alone producing 500,000 tonnes of aluminium.”
Saeed Fadhel Al Mazroui, Emal’s president and CEO, said: “Not a single pot has been lost since inception in 2009 as well by the exceptional metal purity levels of 99.88 per cent and above. Such achievements will encourage and drive us forward as we continue to safely and responsibly accomplish the ambitious goals we have set for ourselves.”
“More importantly, the record production was achieved with over 10 million work-hours with zero lost time injuries [LTI]. This builds on the achievement of five million work-hours with zero LTI in 2011,” Al Mazroui said.
Al Mazroui earlier said that the company’s order books showed healthy demand of 900,000 tonnes, which was conducive to the firm’s development plans.
Last month, Emal launched a new value-added product — foundry aluminium which is mainly used in the automotive sector.
Emal is investing Dh14 billion in the second phase of a development process that will see it increase production to 800,000 metric tonnes by the end of 2012 and 1.4 million metric tonnes by 2014.
