Solvent-free process pushes extrusion-printed aluminium close to full density

A Swiss-Polish research team has achieved up to 97.9 per cent relative density in extrusion-printed AA6061 aluminium by removing the solvent-debinding stage and extending the sintering process. The approach offers a potential alternative to conventional processing routes for sinter-based aluminium additive manufacturing, where oxidation has remained a major obstacle. The study, led by the Swiss Federal Laboratories for Materials Science and Technology (Empa), was published in Progress in Additive Manufacturing on October 15, 2026. An earlier version appeared as a preprint in May, making the journal publication the latest stage in the research’s release. The researchers combined a single-step wick-debinding process with a longer sintering hold to improve the density of printed aluminium...

The European aluminium market still suffers from muted demand, demonstrated by a 6% fall in foil deliveries

The extended period of weak demand for aluminium has adversely affected both prices and metal deliveries. This trend is evident in European aluminium foil shipments, which totalled 217,800 tonnes in the first three months of 2024. According to the European Aluminium Foil Association, this shipment figure represents a year-on-year fall of 6 per cent compared to 231,700 tonnes. Europe is the second-largest consumer of aluminium foil globally, accounting for 15 percent of the world's usage . China remains the largest, representing approximately 49.5 percent of global consumption. The decline in shipments during Q1 2024 stemmed from a 3 per cent drop in demand. The downtrend in foil demand during the first quarter of 2024 was not only limited within the domestic market but also branched out...

EU carbon tax proposal offers no real benefit for Indian exporters: Think Tank GTRI

In a recent statement, the Global Trade Research Initiative (GTRI) highlighted that the European Union's suggestion for India to impose a local carbon tax as a workaround to the EU's upcoming carbon tax would offer little respite to Indian industries. GTRI aims to create high-quality, transparent outputs for governments and Industries on trade, technology, and investment issues from the development and inequality reduction perspective. The core issue lies in the economic disparity between countries. Carbon prices typically reflect a nation's economic standing, meaning that introducing a local...
